Johannes Pietsch: The Voice Uniting Pop and Opera on the European Stage

In the ever-evolving landscape of contemporary pop music, few artists manage to seamlessly bridge the gap between centuries-old classical traditions and modern radio-friendly hooks. Enter Johannes Pietsch—better known to the world by his stage name, JJ. As a genre-bending vocalist, historical Eurovision champion, and proud cultural cross-section of his heritage, Pietsch has captured international attention with his mesmerizing vocal range and distinct artistic vision.

Roots Across Continents

Born on April 29, 2001, in Vienna, Austria, Pietsch’s upbringing was uniquely global. The son of an Austrian IT specialist father and a Filipino cook mother, he spent the majority of his childhood growing up in Dubai, United Arab Emirates.

This diverse background planted the seeds for his eclectic musical identity. Family karaoke sessions introduced him to the vibrant, emotional world of mainstream pop, while his father exposed him to the grand, dramatic realm of opera. Returning to Vienna with his family in 2016, Pietsch immersed himself fully in formal classical training. He attended the prestigious opera school of the Vienna State Opera before continuing his studies at the Music and Arts University of the City of Vienna.

Step-by-Step Ascent

Before achieving mainstream glory, Pietsch cut his teeth in competitive television. In 2020, after missing the application window for The Voice of Germany, he successfully auditioned for the ninth series of The Voice UK. Under the mentorship of will.i.am, he advanced all the way to the Knockout rounds.

The following year, he returned to his home country to compete in the fifth season of the popular Austrian television music show Starmania, securing a spot in the primary final shows. These early television appearances honed his stage presence and prepared him for the massive international spotlight that awaited him.

Making History at Eurovision 2025

Pietsch’s career reached an extraordinary milestone when the Austrian broadcaster ORF announced him as the nation’s representative for the Eurovision Song Contest 2025. Performing the track “Wasted Love”—which he co-wrote alongside Teodora Špirić and producer Thomas Thurner—Pietsch delivered a powerhouse performance that dominated the grand final on May 17, 2025.

Amassing a total of 436 points (including a dominant 258 points from the professional juries), JJ clinched the coveted trophy for Austria. The victory broke multiple records:

  • He became the first Eurovision winner of Southeast Asian descent.
  • He made history as the first solo Eurovision winner born in the 21st century.

His momentum continued well past the contest. Later that year, he collaborated with fellow Eurovision icon Conchita Wurst for a celebrated mashup of their respective entries, subsequently winning fan-voted Eurovision Awards for Outstanding Vocals and Album Cover of the Year. He also embarked on promotional and headline tours, including Act II: Into The Unknown Tour.

Signature Style and Artistry

What truly sets Pietsch apart is his vocal classification as a sopranist—a specialized type of countertenor capable of soaring into high soprano registers. Rather than treating pop and opera as mutually exclusive genres, he blends them into a cinematic pop-opera style. Backed by intense emotional delivery and deep technical proficiency, his music channels the grandeur of classical performance through the emotional intimacy of modern pop.
