Turn Your Favorite Track Into Your Ringtone: The Ultimate Guide
Let’s face it: the default marimba or classic ringtone that came with your phone is a universal trigger for anxiety. Whenever it rings in public, half the people around you check their pockets to see if it is their phone calling.
Why not swap out that generic chime for a track that actually hypes you up? Whether it is an upbeat pop chorus, a soothing indie riff, or a heavy metal guitar solo, transforming your favorite song into your custom ringtone is easier than you might think.
This guide walks you through everything you need to know to get your favorite song playing every time your phone rings, regardless of whether you use an Android or an iPhone.
Step 1: Secure Your Audio File
Before you can set a song as a ringtone, you need the actual audio file (preferably an MP3 for Android or an M4R for iPhone) saved directly on your device.
- Where to get files: You can use audio files you own, tracks purchased from iTunes or Amazon Music, or legally downloaded MP3s.
- A quick note on streaming: Because of digital rights management (DRM), you cannot set a song directly from Spotify, Apple Music, or YouTube Music as a ringtone straight from the app. You need a local audio file stored on your phone’s storage.
Step 2: Trim the Best Part (Keep It Short)
Most phones only let ringtones play for 30 seconds at a time. More importantly, you do not want a two-minute intro playing before someone hangs up!
Use a free online audio trimmer (like AudioTrimmer or Clideo) or a ringtone maker app to clip your favorite 20-to-30-second chorus or hook. Export or save this clipped file back to your phone.
Step 3: Set Your Ringtone by Device
Once your audio clip is ready and saved, the installation process depends on which operating system you are using.
For Android Users
Android makes setting custom ringtones wonderfully straightforward.
- Open your phone’s Files app or music player and locate your trimmed audio file.
- Open your device Settings and tap on Sound & Vibration (or just Sound).
- Tap on Phone Ringtone.
- Scroll through the list of default tones and look for an option like My Sounds, Add Ringtone, or a “+” icon.
- Select your audio file from your storage, hit Save or Apply, and you are all set!
Pro Tip: Alternatively, you can move your audio file directly into the Ringtones folder in your phone’s internal storage using a file manager app, and it will automatically appear in your sound settings.
For Apple / iPhone Users
iPhones require a few extra steps because Apple prefers ringtones to be in the .m4r format. The easiest way to do this entirely on your phone is by using the free GarageBand app.
- Download GarageBand from the App Store if you do not already have it.
- Open GarageBand and create a new Audio Recorder project.
- Tap the Loop icon at the top right, select the Files tab, and browse for your song file.
- Drag and drop the song onto the timeline track. Trim the audio clip so it is under 30 seconds long.
- Tap the downward arrow in the top-left corner and select My Songs.
- Press and hold your project thumbnail, tap Share, and choose Ringtone.
- Give your ringtone a name and tap Export. Once exported, select Use sound as… and choose Standard Ringtone.
You’re All Set!
Now, the next time your phone rings, you won’t just be answering a call—you’ll be greeted by your favorite beat.
