The Truth Behind Dr. Vikas Divyakirti’s Civil Services Journey: Was He an IAS Officer?
Few names command as much respect and immediate recognition in India’s competitive exam ecosystem as Dr. Vikas Divyakirti. As the founder of Drishti IAS, a premier coaching institute based in New Delhi, he has mentored hundreds of thousands of aspirants aiming for India’s elite bureaucracy. Because of his title, his profound mastery over civil services subjects, and his immense influence, a common question often sparks debate among students and casual observers alike: Was Vikas Divyakirti actually an IAS officer?
The short answer is no. While he successfully cleared the rigorous Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) Civil Services Examination, his actual career trajectory took a vastly different path.
Clearing the UPSC Exam: The 1996 Success
The confusion surrounding Dr. Divyakirti’s background is completely understandable given his stellar academic performance. In 1996, appearing for the civil services examination for the very first time at the young age of 22, he successfully cleared the country’s toughest competitive exam, securing an All India Rank (AIR) of 384.
Service Allocation: The Central Secretariat Service (CSS)
Cracking the UPSC exam ensures a candidate a spot in the civil services, but the specific service allocated depends entirely on rank, category, and preference.
Despite clearing the exam, his rank did not place him into the Indian Administrative Service (IAS) or the Indian Police Service (IPS). Instead, he was allotted to the Central Secretariat Service (CSS). Within this service, he was appointed as a Section Officer in the Department of Official Language under the Ministry of Home Affairs, Government of India.
The Turning Point: Resigning from Government Service
Dr. Divyakirti’s tenure inside the bureaucratic machinery was short-lived. Driven by a deep-rooted passion for academics, literature, and teaching, he quickly realized that a desk-bound government job did not align with his true calling.
