Decoding Montagem: The Raw, Hypnotic Electronic Sound Shaking Up Global Dancefloors

If you have spent any time scrolling through TikTok, Instagram Reels, or underground electronic music communities over the last couple of years, you have likely encountered a distinct, relentless sonic assault. It is fast, heavily distorted, features frantic percussion patterns, and often carries an undeniable, dark hypnotic energy.

This is Montagem—a fierce, hyper-modern subgenre of Brazilian electronic music that has burst out of local funk scenes to become a global internet phenomenon. But what exactly is it, where did it come from, and why is it capturing the imagination of millions worldwide?

What is Montagem Music?

At its core, montagem (Portuguese for “montage” or “editing”) is an electronic music style characterized by the heavy sampling, splicing, and digital manipulation of vocals, basslines, and percussion.

While Brazilian funk (funk carioca) has historically relied on heavy Miami bass rhythms and rhythmic chanting, modern montagem takes the production aesthetic to an extreme. Producers—often operating in bedroom studios using Digital Audio Workstations (DAWs) like FL Studio—take fragmented vocal chops, iconic meme soundbites, pitched-down whispers, and sirens, and fuse them with aggressive, distorted sub-bass and breakneck tempos.

Key musical characteristics include:

  • Extreme Tempo & Rhythm: Tracks often range from fast-paced rhythms to blistering tempos that push past standard house or techno speeds, driving an intense sense of urgency.
  • The Phonk Crossover: A massive subset of montagem intersects with Phonk (specifically Brazilian Phonk), utilizing cowbell melodies, gritty analog distortion, and menacing trap aesthetics.
  • Fragmented Vocals: Instead of traditional verse-chorus structures, montagem relies on repeating, glitchy vocal loops that build psychological tension before a heavy drop.
  • Lo-Fi Grittiness: Embracing digital clipping, heavy compression, and saturated low-end frequencies gives the genre its signature “underground” and menacing texture.

The Roots: From Rio Funk to Digital Alchemy

To understand montagem, you have to look at the lineage of Funk Carioca (or Brazilian funk), which originated in the favelas of Rio de Janeiro in the late 1980s and 1990s. Early funk producers experimented with audio sequencing and sampling American Miami bass records.

Over the decades, the scene evolved through various waves—from funk ostentação to the minimalist, high-energy funk mandelão. The term montagem itself is a nod to the old-school DJ technique of cutting and pasting audio loops together on hardware or early software.
