Want to blend rare SoundCloud gems, custom mashups, unreleased tracks, or personal voice notes right into your daily Spotify rotations? While Spotify hosts millions of tracks, its built-in Local Files feature allows you to seamlessly integrate your own custom audio files and listen to them across your devices.

Here is everything you need to know to unlock custom songs on Spotify across desktop and mobile.

Step 1: Set Up Local Files on Desktop (The Foundation)

Because managing and syncing files is easiest on a computer, you should always start by setting up your local library on a PC or Mac.

  1. Open the Spotify desktop app and click on your profile picture in the top-right corner, then select Settings.
  2. Scroll down until you find the Library section and toggle Show Local Files to On.
  3. Once enabled, a Show songs from section will appear alongside a button that says Add a source.
  4. Click Add a source and select the folder on your computer where your custom MP3, M4P, or audio files are saved.
  5. Head over to Your Library on the left sidebar and click on the newly populated Local Files playlist folder. All of your valid audio tracks will appear here.

Note: Spotify natively supports standard audio formats like MP3, MP4, and M4P. Formats like FLAC or Apple Lossless (M4A) may require conversion or a codec pack depending on your operating system.

Step 2: Add Custom Songs to Playlists

Once your tracks show up in the desktop “Local Files” folder, you can organize them just like any other song:

  • Create a brand-new playlist or right-click an existing one.
  • Drag and drop your custom tracks from the Local Files folder into your playlist.
  • Pro Tip: Edit the song details (artist name, track title) using a metadata tag editor on your computer before importing them, ensuring they display cleanly inside Spotify.

Step 3: Listen to Custom Songs on Mobile (iOS & Android)

Want to take those custom tracks on the go? You can sync them to your phone so they play seamlessly on mobile.

For Android Users:

  1. Open the Spotify app on your phone and tap your profile picture > Settings and privacy.
  2. Scroll down to Apps and devices and toggle on Local audio files.
  3. Ensure your phone and computer are connected to the same Wi-Fi network.
  4. Open Spotify on your computer, navigate to the playlist containing your custom songs, and hit Download.
  5. On your phone, open that exact same playlist and download it. The custom songs will sync directly over your local network.

For iPhone / iOS Users:

  1. Tap your profile picture > Settings and privacy > Apps and devices and turn on Local audio files.
  2. On your iOS device, use the native Files app to place your custom audio tracks directly into the folder labeled Spotify (located under On My iPhone). Alternatively, you can sync files via a USB cable using Finder (Mac) or iTunes (Windows) by dragging files into the Spotify device folder.
  3. Open Spotify, head to Your Library, and open your Local Files folder to play or add them to playlists.

Troubleshooting Checklist

If your custom tracks are acting stubborn or refusing to play, keep these quick fixes in mind:

  • Check your network: For wireless syncing between desktop and mobile, both devices must be logged into the same Spotify account and connected to the exact same Wi-Fi network.
  • DRM protection: Spotify cannot play copyright-protected or DRM-locked files downloaded from unauthorized subscription streaming caches.
  • File formats: If a track won’t show up, double-check that it is an uncorrupted .mp3 or .m4p file.
